Scag Cougar - Are they a decent mower?

I know that Scag has not made this specialty mower for a couple years now. I just wanted to know what people thought of them. Are they a decent mower?

The 27 HP liquid cooled unit with a 52" deck sounds interesting.

I like the concept of one deck being able to bag, mulch, and side discharge. Did the Scag Cougar deck perform these tasks well or was it lacking in one or more areas?

Depending on the responses, I might see if any dealers still had any left over in inventory. If you know a dealer who has any, please let me know. I might even consider a low hour machine.

Thanks.

Yes, I am aware of that. I guess I would have to retrain myself to start the other direction on the first two boader laps when side-discharging.

Any Scag guys with some experience on this machine? Would like to hear from some people who may have used this machine over a period on time.

We bought a used Scag Cougar around 2000 after TruGreen tested it for one year. The machine has been perfect for our application. Our unit is 48" with 25hp Kohler. In the summer we mulch with the outlet closed, and in the winter we bag rye grass. Sometimes when we do a field we side discharge. The machine has good suction almost as good as our Walker. The only thing wrong with our unit is that the blade speed is a lot lower than our new Scag Tiger and that means you can't run as fast. Maybe they have increased the speed on new units. The unit weighs a lot but everything is rock solid and very reliable. I didn't think they made the unit anymore?
