I had an 86 Chevy 6.2 Diesel 3/4 ton (My first vehicle when I was 16). Was said to have 180,000 miles on it (wasn't sure because of the rollover on the odometer). But the truck ran great for me, all I really had to replace were the starters. I thought it was a very reliable truck.

Yes, it was very slow, but it did get me anywhere between 15-20 MPG. It had just barely enough power to drive on the backroads.

I do miss that truck.

I think the 6.2 diesel will treat you fine, unless if you plan on looking for something powerful to tow heavy loads.

A Chevy 6.2 Diesel is what I would recommend to any teenager looking for his or her first vehicle, it's so slow that they can't get into any trouble.

(But I did manage to get a couple of speeding tickets with my old 6.2 Diesel, can you believe it!!!)

While gutless pigs, the early GM diesels were great motors for longivity and mileage - if properly maintained. I too used to think they were converted gas motors, until it was shown to me they aren't. Find one that's been well maintained, don't expect too much from it, and you'll get a fine truck.

Good truck for me to start out with, minus having spent a ton of money on it. The mileage was great, though, I have to admit. I must have had a real lemon. In 1.5 years of having the truck, I put 2 starters in it, 2 batteries, alternator, a transmission (one before lasted 2 years), water pump, fuel pump, injectors, and a set of glow plugs. I sold it with 115K miles.

Bought 93 turbo 6.5 2500 4x4 Chevy new in 1993. After towing landscape trailer and dual axel trailer (loaded with Kubota L-35 loader-back-hoe) 250,000 miles I purchased new truck. The truck had no problems other than the paint falling off, I wish I could say that about the Dura-max, and 6.0 I have had since then. The garage where I have our vehicles serviced bought the 93 Chevy from us and is still runing it.

The 93's were a good year for the 6.5's. They used the mechanical injection pump. Most of your 6.5 problems were related to the 94 and up electronic injection pumps. Then throw in your headgasket here and there, and slightly rarer crankshaft failures.

My Dad was/is an orininal member of the first 6.2/6.5 Diesel Page. He owned a 95 Suburban. It ran REAL good (300hp, lots of torque!), got good mileage, but it just got to the point where we sat back and started adding up his reciepts, and you quickly realized he could have bought another vehicle with the money he spent on things that a gasser would have never needed.
