How do we make our sites rank higher?

My opinion is at the end of either my Advice Index 1 page, or Advice Index 2 page - one or the other: in fact, I think both have flash buttons near the end. Its how I managed to do it.

This is an older thread, but I'll add something I didn't, about photo galleries, discussed the first batch of replies.

If anyone wants, look at the albums on my site.

Thats from an image host - $25 per year - and they give me a code that's just 2 lines, to load the album within my own page.

And anybody with even 1/2 a brain can easily upload the photos from the computer, edit captions etc..

It's a nice extra way to include an image gallery in a website.

For what its worth, I'm a professional software developer who does some side consulting. I start at $2000 minimum for web site backend programming, and that does not include the website design, You can provide a designer that I will coordinate with, or I have one that I prefer as well.

What your $2000 gets you is things like:

• Set up and configuration of a custom server.
• True online credit card proccessing (Not Paypal) with a installed SSL Certificate.
• A custom built database and customized web interface that allows for sales tracking and report building, as well as integrating with Quickbooks, batch billing etc. Keep track of all your customers easily,
• Any sort of custom feedback type systems, automated forms etc,
• Custom built statistic tracking and reporting, find out how long each viewer is on what page, figure out which pages lead to sales versus which ones don't.

The $2000 is for 40 hours of my work, any additional work is $75 an hour.

Anyways, I'm not posting this to advertise, I just thought I'd give you guys a reality check on what a professional charges.

By the way Webman, that calculator would be very to simple implement with a SQL database. The main time consuming task would be entering all the values and maintaining them, however, a quick update maintenance interface could be built.

I'd like to note that I know PHP, but I dislike working with it. I find that ASP.NET coupled with C# is a much more professional language, and is the preferred choice in the business world. I'm currently working on a website that recieves more than 5 million hits a day, and I don't think PHP could handle that

5 million hits, or 5 million visitors?

Also, the sample package you mentioned, it sounds like something that would enable a company to have their own in-house server. It that about right?

5 Million hits (I'm sure some are repeat visitors lol), I'm not going to drop any names due to job security, but I'm a consultant currently working on a project with the largest cell phone company in the U.S.

As far as what I listed above, This would be to set up a server at a hosting provider, a dedicated server with a hosting provider costs around $400 a month, and isn't really needed for low traffic site, so I would reccomend a shared server unless site growth demands it. For what its worth, I doubt Lawnsite is on a dedicated server.

If you just so happen to have T1 at your house, I'd happily configure a server for you too

Teach yourself HTML in the off season. It is not that hard to do.

Start off with a text editor like the note pad in accessories.

Oh BTW CSS is a really neat deal too. Make one change to the style sheet and it changes the entire website.
