Engine Mods

i know this may seem a little strange but has anyone thought of modifying any of their v-twin engines for better performance? i know they sell all sorts of cool stuff for the briggs engines for the mini dragsters. has anyone thought of grinding a good cam for the Kohler 20 hp engines? has anyone done any head porting to their engines? i think this could be a good side industry if there are people who are interseted. just wonderin'

I'd like to work one,but your better off using a motorcycle engine IMO.These engines do not have the RPM potential to make any serious power, the valves are too heavy, ports to small, and rods/crank are strong enough. It would be fun would likely sound like a Harley, especially with straight pipes.

Ever thrown a rod? We never have, but we have 2 engines with the rods broke, one is a Tecumseh 1 cyl. has a hole in the block near the starter. The other is a 18 HP Onan, the rod and piston are in a thousand pieces, with a good scratch on the cylinder wall. Why are they aluminum?

I'm very interested in getting an old beater and modding the engine. I thought about modding the JD, but I'm not too sure I want to mess around with it.

How realistic is dropping a motorcycle engine? Also, how much might it cost?

Thanks in advance.

The Tecumseh V engines are prone to throwing rods and breaking the oil pump rod. The 16 through 18 hp Onans will break a rod for no reason at all. You can take a 5 hp briggs out of the box and it can run 5800 rpms for racing. There just isn't any good aftermarket hipo parts for most engines. The easy way to get more blade tip speed and ground speed is to raise your engine RPM's to 3900 rpm's if you need the speed....

MODS. What do you think would happen to a 27KAWI liquid cooled that was given a burst of NITROUS????

I would love to try.

Tecumseh makes disposable crap. I had an 8hp snow king throw the rod thru the side. The engine had no more than 8 hours on it and it was not for commercial use. As far as help from the company- their service is as good as their product=IT SUCKS!
