Should I buy this truck?

This will be my third year doing lawn care in the midwest. I am 18 and in my freshmen year of college. For the last two years I have been using my 1992 Jeep Cherokee to pull my trailer and I have always got tools and whatnot in the back of my jeep. I have been looking to purchase a truck that I can use for mowing. I usually mow anywhere between 30-40 accounts a week. Today I came across a 1990 GMC Sierra 1500. It is a regular cab, long bed. It is a 2wd, auto, no bedliner, already has towing pkg, the tires are average, the truck itself has 105k miles, and the motor came out of a totaled 1993 GMC 1500 and has 68k on it. I went to look at it and it purrs like a kitten, the tranny seemed very smooth and the power steering had no sings of problems. The older man has this truck listed at $2000 FIRM, which seemed low for a GMC 1500? Being as I am a good negotiator I use the I'm only 18 and have a small budget routine...and I got him to come down to $1600. I am suposed to meet him tomorrow mourning to seal the deal.....Should I buy?

dont be stupid bring it to a mechanic.. as long as they say its fine then you cant get any better for that price... engine was swapped and out of a totalled car so listening to it alone wont tell you its alrright

If it passes a good mechanics check then that is an excellent price but you will get everyone on this site telling you to go take out a loan and spend 20k on a used truck for no reason

It is sitting in the back of a mechanic's shop, the guy selling it just had it checked out so he knew if there were any problems before he sold it to anyone. I talked to the mechanic today and he said it was a strong runnig vehicle....is there something special I should ask or look for?

In California anything that will pass smog is worth $1000. Trucks are worth $1500 for any piece of junk that will pass smog. It is a good deal IMO. I sold a 1989 Chevy work truck 3 years ago for $2000. You are at the bottom end of the truck food chain and anything can go wrong, but probably won't for a long time. Bank an emergency fund for tranny, engine, rear end, or something else major that could fail.

Where did that come from? Don't put words in the mouths of everyone on this site. I can't recall when anyone has said get a loan for 20,000 and buy a truck. Most on here seem to think the $2500-$6000 trucks are the way to go. You also have something related to this in your sig line. But I'm sure you came up with that so you would be able to mention your mercedes. Very impressive.

because 90-95% of people on this forum say driving a 1000 dollar truck means u are a dirty LCO.. Im not sure what forum u belong to there are tons and tons of threads where its repeated

and there are so many LCO's driving maintenance with huge dump trucks and they still bag the clippings and leave it on the curb

You seem to be agreeing with me lol why are u defending the other people on the forum u dont agree with lol

I had the mercedes in there before the f550 comment actually but it doesnt matter this is the internet everyone thinks its just a lie anyway i bought the car for personal satisfaction if i was trying to impress i would have gotten the e550 with no options for the same price as my e350 with many options to make my ride better not the guy behind me seeing my emblem(only stock diff is double dual exhuast and v8 instead of v6 ... not to get sidetracked lol

thats an appropriate price for the truck, and a good deal with the lower miles.

i agree.. i use a $600 truck, and just from the milage i put on it i have deducted almost $10,000 in taxes.. talk about some savings. and no, the fuel etc did not even come close to that.

with me a nice truck would be tore up in under a year.. total waste.
i go for the crotch rockets

It sounds like a good deal. Seems there are a lot of pickups with that body style on the road. I have a 96 3/4 ton. They are good pickups.

For $2,000 or $1,600 you can't go wrong.
