one more thing I cant ramember. I got pulled over twice this winter
what does he haul? is it placard? does he cross state lines?

last month Kurt and I sat through a class on this, he is correct as long as you are hauling your own stuff you are a "not for hire" carrier and most of the stuff your talking about does not apply.

I got fined 1st time for 180, second time for no inspection cards and it was 180 also. He hauls furniture, and delivers to carter lumber stores and jobsites. He does cross state lines. I was told in a seminar if you travel more than 75 miles one way and your truck and trailor meet the 10k requirements then you need the stuff I listed. Plus the triangles, 1st aide kit, fire extiguisher, and fuses. I don't care if you guys do it or not, Its what I was told and I know many friends and family that have been fined for it in trucks like my 3/4 ton.

well that would make him a "for hirer" carrier, the 10K falls into play then. BUT we haul our own stuff so we are considered a " not for hirer" carrier. totally different rules. im not sayin you didnt get pulled over and given a ticket that you paid, but you could have fought it. cops write tickets for stuff all the time that they are wrong or have no idea about. we had a rookie cop here that was going to cite us for no CDL in a fire truck because he only read half the rules.

I just got one at lowes. They're suppossed to be changed out every couple years though.

And to go on cops writing wrong tickets. I got pulled over last year for not having a county sticker on my trailer plate. I told the state trooper i never got a sticker. Called up the DMV and they said no your not suppossed to get county sticker for trailers. He also wanted to write me up on non commercial plates when the truck had "TRUCK" and trailer had "TRAILER" on them, and my registration even said "COMM TRAILER" i fought with him for 20 minutes on that one.

Thanks Kurt, I was going there or Home Depot but thought I would ask.

Thankfully the cops in the city I work more often than not know me and don't hassle me. I actually got pulled over by one last year for not having brake lights on the trailer. He walked up to the truck and said oh it's you. Then says do you realize you don't have brake lights. I said nope, he said park it and get it fixed. He still ran my license to make sure I did not have anything outstanding on me.

The issue was the truck and not the trailer, simple fix for the next day hooked it up to the other truck and he saw me and just waved. Told him I had been having issues with the lighting hook up and had it in several times. they finally got it fixed after me telling them the cops pulled me over.
