Very dependable machines in general. I have never run the 223 so demo it. Make sure you have good dealer support. No matter what you buy you'll need parts sometimes it takes a while to get if you have to order thru the mail.

How small is the 223 ? Just curios every GH I've owned cut and striped as good as my Lazer Z and my Super Z with stripe roller kits on them. Maybe the newer ones don't have the rubber flap on the back of the deck that helped them stripe. My 1st GH has over 3000 hrs on it before I have to replace the hydros. So durability should not be a question. I think they are equal to most in the playing field.

On a 52 inch cut you are getting a 23 air cooled, and the rubber flaps on grasshoppers are a joke i know i have purchased a new 223,and a 220 and a 725,we went with scag three years ago i am not bashing grasshopper itz a opinion.

I mowed with a friends new GH about two weeks ago, the deck completely stopped cutting from grass build up in the deck. So I went back to the trailer and got the JD 757 and finished with no problems like always.

I myself have run a grasshopper mower for about a year now and have had excellent results with it. To comment on the 200 series all I can really say is that the duramax deck leaves a cut second to maybe the old Ultracut. The one thing I do not care for on the 200 series is that there is not a Kawi or Kubota engine option, I personally do not care for the Kohler engines. As for the rubber flap on the back of the deck I agree that it is near useless for striping but then again its intended purpose is to control debris blowout. If your pockets are deep enough I recommend trying the 321D w/ 52" deck. This to me is an excellent combination with many good reviews that can be found on here. Good Luck with your decision and I'm sure you'll be happy if you choose the 223.

I know, the 200 series to me are under powered i like the 25 horse kaws on a 52 inch deck,as for the rubber flap a friend replaced with a thicker and heaver flap stripes excellent for just a few bucks compared to buying the striping kits from scag that are 400 bucks.

I guess I got lucky mine worked great. It was a 2001 725 . I know nothing about the new duramax decks. But even my oldest GH a 1992 720 and still working will outstripe many mowers and it doesn't have the rubber flap. Just a solid deck that cuts clean and leaves a great stripe. Just a little to small for most of my jobs now.

Did scag finally get a striper roller too ?

They have a bolt on and off kit very good but expensive and in places you will get stuck.
