23 Kohler, pulsing?

I have a 23 kohler with about 1300 hrs on it. It runs fine, but when not under load (blades not on) it seems to pulse and run kinda weird. The RPMS quickly drop off and then come back, in about 3-4 second intervals, its almost like it is missing, but it doesnt do it when loaded. I have never noticed this before, is this normal? Also the ile seems to have got really low all by itself.

Looking for running or not running equip near GR MI.

Make sure there is zero play in the governor linkage to the carb. If that's ok then I would say clean and blow out the carb.

I had mine to do that some last summer; I found that the idle speed screw had backed off just slightly. I adjusted the ldle back up just a tad and all was back to normal.

My kohler 16hp walker was doing this exact thing but it was doing it when blades were on or not just more noticable then they were off. They took the carb off and soaked it blew it out and cleaned it up runs like it alwase has

Idle circuit in the carb is probably dirty like others have said.

is the idle circuit managed electronically/via solenoid?

What and where does the governor linkage connect to?

What is the best method for cleaning the carbs? I was thinking just pull the float bowl and blast the carb with carb cleaner?

would any of this be a contributing factor to the backfires that I keep getting when I turn it off?

Its a kohler they all back fire no matter if they are running right or not. Stright from kohler techs they say shut it down at 1/2 to full throttle and it will quit backfireing

No, the fuel shut down solenoid controlls the main jet.

Read the manual for the governor linkage.

Remove the carb and soak it.

Shut it off at full throttle.

Have an owner's manual? Start it up full throttle/full choke, take off the choke, run high speed, shut off high speed.
