5 HP Briggs & Stratton idle.

My rototiller 5 HP B&S will only idle.
When I give it gas it sputters puts out black smoke and acts like its going to die.
I had a mechanic look at it , he put in a spark plug, diaphram and new gas.
Still didn't help.

The carb. needs to come off then spray all ports and passages with carb & choke cleaner with the small straw then re-assemble.

Whats the model and type numbers off the engine ?

It should be stamped in the top of the flywheel cover near the spark plug.

OK, Those numbers tell me you have the old style adjustable carb, Remove the adjuster and the main jet behind it. You will see three small holes, Make sure these are open along with the main jet hole and both fuel pick-up tube screens. When re-assembled open the adjuster one turn for initial start-up then adjust from there.

"13202 06040 01 76121507"

Not quite right!
Model should be 6 digits. It's probably a 132202?
06040 That should be 4 digits and it'll probably start with a 0, 2 or 4.
Second digit should be a 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4. No 6's??
01 That part doesn't matter.
76121507 built Dec 15, 1976

You might try turning the needle valve in a little bit.

I took the carb apart and cleaned it out and still only above an idle.
I have to have the choke all the way out to get it to run, as soon as I put the choke in it quits.
I tried keeping the throttle wide open when closing the choke, it will rev up a little the dA little black smoke comes out also when I do this.
Thanks for all your help.
