Excessive Grass Clippings

So this week i've had two customers call and complain about the grass clippings we left in their yard. It rained for 4 days and the grass shot up especially for my biweekly customers. We blew it around but there was still alot of grass left and we aren't going to spend time to rake and bag it. So we left it. Should I just cut the yard twice and bag it? If i do that i'm going to charge them for it and i know i'm going to get complaints when people receive their invoice. Would you call and complain over one cut after alot of rain if you've been happy with the service?

I would just very quickly run back over it.. maybe raise your deck and just run over the bad areas... if you have a helper have him blow along side you as you mow so its not a total mess when your done.

Here in spokane wa, the grass is usually very heavy and bagging except in probably july and august is the norm. Usually anything over 3-4 bags and I start charging $2.50 per bag more

I've never been up there, but here it rains almost weekly & grass grows very fast all spring long. I keep raising my height so I don't have any clumps, but if I can catch it when it is a little dry, I'll double cut & get it back down. When I have multiple customers in the same area that want it, I'll offer 2 cuts a week during the spring to keep up. If it's just one, the higher price wouldn't make it worth it to them.

Let the bi-weekly's know they should be cut more often, whether they want to hear it or not, that's just what needs to be done. Gotta love people that want something for nothing!

As for the complaints, just let them know the situation. "It's been raining cats & dogs & the only way to keep up is to cut more often. If you'd like, we can switch to a Monday/Thursday schedule until things start to dry out. It's still the same price, but the grass clippings shouldn't be as noticeable as they have been lately and you'll be getting the quality service you desire."

Since this is your first year, I wouldn't necessarily outright drop the customer because they want it done biweekly. You will probably want all the business you can get. See if they can "meet you in the middle" - let you mow it every 10 days. And if rain is forecast (sometimes it happens w/out warning) then mow it early. THEN, if they complain, you can afford to drop them, because they are more of a headache than they are worth, despite this being your first year.

Running over the grass clippings is what I do on yards that are tall. I have several accounts that were biweekly but I told them every 10 days or so, give or take a day. They were fine with that. They understand. Explain to them that it looks messy when it's only mowed once every 2 weeks. If they don't understand that, then maybe tell them to start searching for another company. Hope this helps. Good luck.

With all the rain we have been having, I have been mowing twice a week and still have a lot of clippings on top. Tell them this will continue until growth slows down or will have to mow a lot more often.
