Smoking Kohler 20hp mag

Hello,
I bought an older Wizard with a 20 hp kohler Magnium engine today.
After getting rid of the bad gas it fires right up.
But it smokes pretty good. I pulled the primary and secondary air filters off and ran it (still smoked) put My hand on the crank vent tube it puffs air.
Any idea what would make it smoke?
Head gasket or rings.
Any help mutch appreciated.

Did you check the oil level? If the engine has been sitting a while it may have a crankcase overfilled with a mixture of gas and oil, particularly if is a gravity flow fuel system(without a fuel pump). If that's not the case, check the compression and do a leak down test. Just a couple of quick thoughts.

Thanks Guys,
Oil level is dead on the money. Does smell a little like fuel.
The gas tank is under the seat kinda like My old John Deere.
I'll take a peek in a minute and see if it has a pump and test the compression.
Was'nt a bad deal...couldnt resist $60.00 even if I have to go thru it.

Ok here goes..
Checked compression 100 lbs on both sides.
1 cylnder I noticed as I shined the flash light in it looks like gas and oil on the cylinder wall (bottom) spark plug is caked up inside the ceramic/cathode.
And it looks like oil is leaking down from under the valve.

Where to start?
Pop the head off?
To add to it it does have a fuel pump with four phillip screw holding it to the block..Its about 2 x 2 inches

Another question or 2 before I get started.
How does the valve stem guides come out?
Do You have to pull the engine?

Louisianagames,

Welcome to the lawnsite.com. Before you start taking the engine apart run it for at least a few tanks of gas. If this unit had sat for sometime the cylinder walls and valve stems could have developed rust. It may take some running for this to clean up. You might just fine that with a little bit of run time all or most of the smoke clears up.

Well I changed the oil and let it run 1/2 hr. It smokes pretty good..If I rev it up small hesitation (normal) then smoke factory goes to work....
Might run it when the skeeter's come out

Got the manual thanks for the link and help.

Is the valve guides hard to change,,meaning do I have to remove the engine?
If so I'll rebuild it.
Its a m20 QS Horizontal shaft engine
