Well I bought a 36" Toro gear T-bar this year. My first real commercial mower. I wish I had bought a 48" and I wish it was a rider.

A 36 still won't fit through a most of my gates and the yards where it does come in handy I would save even more time with a 48".

Jsut starting out here - I bought a 33" cub and it fits in all the gates. Obviously, a bigger mower would save time for the yards with no fences. If the majority of your yards have no fences then go bigger.

If you get one be sure to get a hydro. They perform much better then belt drives. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of a hydro walkbehind in my mind.
Advantages:
  • Fits through gates
  • Gets in and out of tight areas
  • Can handle hills to steep for a ztr
  • Faster then a 21"
  • Can be used as a trim mower
Disadvantages:
  • Much slower than a ztr on open lots
  • Not many big baggers available so you need to empty them alot
  • Walking

If you get one get a dual hydro. My first (32") walk behind was not hydro and if i could go back and spend the extra 1000 to 1500 bucks i would do it in a heartbeat. A year after i bought my blet driven WB i bought a 52" hydro so i realized the advantages of having hydro as opposed to belt drive. If my smaller WB was hydro it would save time mowing, and in some cases even eliminate the need to use the (21") trim mower.

I would get a 48 in. walk behind, uless you have a lot of gated yards. I have one and I can fit it in quite a few places that you couldn't fit a 48 in Z into. For sure, go with Hydro. If you go with belt, you will just end up pushing it sometime, and that's a pain.

My first thought as well.

IMO, there are a few significant differences between a 36" and a 48" WB, at least on my Tracers.
