260+ Winterizations

Well, I know a lot of you guys have a lot more winterizations to do that we do. But I am pretty excited about it. This is by far the most I've ever had to do. So far, we have about 260 of them signed up. More and more every year. I expect some more in coming weeks.

So far I only have signed 10 for this year. Not to sure what everyone is waiting on. I know the weather here has been great lately but com on folks its not going to stay that way forever. I even sent out flyers and letters this year. Had a $10 price hike this year but still in the ballpark as the comp.

Well, a lot of it is because we link our 5-year warranty on their system to them having us do the winterization and spring start-up each year. If they don't let us do that, they lose their warranty. So a lot of people have a big incentive to make sure we do the winterization. Since we install about 40-50 systems each year, our winterization list grows by at least that much each year.

After we've been doing the winterizations for 5 years, I find people just keep having us do it anyway, even though their warranty might be up. By that time, it's just habbit. They realize the value of it and are used to having us do it. So they usually keep having us do it.

Another part is we have a FT irrigation technician. His FT job is just to be out fixing people's old broken sprinkler systems every day. And I have him suggestive sell winterizations to all of the people he does work for. In addition, we go back and call all of the customers he worked for at the end of the season and try to get them to sign up for it. Some of them do.

So the list keeps growing this way. And I am excited about having so many. But I am also jealous about those here who have like 500 or 1000 to do. That's awesome!

I guess it also helps that we have 170 landscape maintenance accounts. And I always try to sell sprinkler system winterization to all of them each year too via mail or email.

I have to work a little extra hard to get winterizations because in our climate, it's not an absolute necessity. We sometimes go a whole winter without any freezes or snow. But then there are winters where we get a 1 week solid freeze and everyone who didn't winterize regrets it. So it's a little bit of a tough sell. Many people don't think it's necessary until something breaks one year or they have a geyser in their yard on December 29th. We have to do a lot of convincing to people that it really is worth it. Because when they don't winterize and there is a break or multiple valves break, it can be hundreds or thousands of dollars in repairs.

Concerning selling winterize, we're in the same boat up here too. I have been
sucessfull in relating winterizing to fire hydrants...you never know when you
will need them...cheap insurance & a chance to spot abnormalities for winter
work.

Twelve bucks a zone after three? Is that a time of the day, or are you really charging that much per extra zone?
