What is the BEST Tiller to buy for ground prep?

Rear tine i'm looking for, prefered under $1000

i got a super bronco by troybilt. i was hesitant at 1st thinking it would be some homeowner crap but it is actually a pretty good tiller bought it at lowe's for $600 or so.

BCS is the way to go if you want a tiller that will last forever and that can be used for other things besides tilling. BCS tillers are kinda like the Toro Dingo they have attachments that can be switched in no time which make it very versatile and unlike other tillers it has a solid steel drive shaft and a much faster tine speed. You can expect to spend around $3,000 for one. If your looking for one around $1000 husqvarna make a pretty good tiller, I think its around $800.

Buy one with rear tines. I just used a front tine one last week that I borrowed from a friend and it was useless compared to the rear tine unit. The troybuilt one looks pretty sound for the price you want to spend.

BCS is nice but high. I have always run Hondas- and they have been wonderful. The 800 is a great tiller.

I picked up a Roto-hoe from the late 80's early 90's. This thing is a beast. And in the winter, it doubles as a Snow Blower.

The BEST and Under 1000 are two different categories.

The best tiller that I know of are made by Barreto. Hydraulic drive for the wheels, hydraulic drive for the tines. Tines and wheel speed vary independently.

If you can find an old Howard tiller they are built like tanks with 2 cylinder Wisconsin engines on them.

Yah, ditto that. There isn't anything under $1000.00 that I would consider buying for landscape work. Better off to just rent tillers until you can afford a nice one.

I prefer the Barreto 13hp and 16hp tillers. Those kick some serious butt. Once you've used one of the cheap $1000 tillers for a while and they try out a Barreto, you'd be sold instantly. They are just worlds better.

Gonna have to agree with DALLAS 05, I too have a troy built (rear tine)
its unstopable to say the least, but it depends on your average job and your
taste. Cant think of the HP off hand, but its got power. Nothing really big
or small, its a medium size which works for small and large jobs. $500-$600
@ Blaine's Farm&Fleet. It has forward and reverse which is a must. The only thing
i dont like the tines kick on even if your not tilling and you want to get it from A to B
