Yup, i'm from Windsor and i worked for Greenlawn for a while, the complete ban on pesticide use inside city limits goes into effect next year (Jan 1/09). Right now there are alot of restrictions on use, you really need to get a copy of the bylaw from the cities website and read it all, some of the main restrictions are:
-All companies operating in the city must be IPM certified
-No spraying if temp is over 25C
-No spraying if wind is over 10km/hr
-No spraying on smog days
-Cannot spray more than 25% of the turf area

There are a whole lot more get a copy of the bylaw and read it carefully, last year the city was just giving out warnings, Greenlawn got several, but this year they are going to start fining people, i'm not sure but i think the fines start around $2000 per violation.

Good luck

Stay on top of the updates. Many associations are working diligently with the provincial governement on their new proposal. One line item that is being highly pushed is that a provincial ban would superced any municipal bans.

What I am trying to say is whats here today may be gone tomorrow.

You are absolutely right golfguy. We must stay on top of things and support our organizations that are heping us fight these ban proposals. New Brunswick is in the same boat right now. What is the situation in regard to bans in the U.S.? or is it only Canada that has an uneducated public.

The fear mongering, and idiotecy is spreading. Fight it every where you can by educating the people you come in contact with.
It is not control products(pesticides) you should fear , but stupid people with agendas.

Well, it's pretty much to late in Ontario, the same thing is happening with this as what happened with the smoking ban, a bunch of municipalities started introducing bylaws and then the provincial government picked up the issue. The province is said to be introducing legislation some time this spring to ban cosmetic use of pesticides.

People always over react, they fail to understand that with proper IPM practices pesticide use is minimal and there is relatively little effect to the environment. The bigger problem lies with uneducated companies and home owners that are dumping way to much product down at rates that are way too high causing all sorts of leaching, runoff and other issues. Just putting things in the hands of the professionals and requiring proper IPM training for the companies would be enough to reduce pesticide usage to the point where there would be no danger to the general public.

Oh, and just for a laugh there is one exemption in Windsor's bylaw, no restrictions or bans are placed on the use of pesticides on golf courses, so the rich city councilors and there rich buddies can still have a dandelion free golf game.
