kohler engine problems ????

my 36 scag witch is 4 years old started to tap the other day.we had just changed the oil a week before. now i have and open trailer witch we tarp at anyway i check the engine and the oil is gray.right away i think water so i changed the oil again with the filter..i start it and the tap stops. so we pulled it out today and the same thing but the oil was not as gray , now mind you it was brand new oil.and we haven't had any rain..

so what the hell ????

ps starting to pop white smoke when we back of the throttle..

the grey is probly metal shavings. look at it real close under a light. time for a repower.

take a magnet to the underside of the container you drained into and if it is metal you will see the grey in the oil move around as you move the magnet.

Aluminum ain't gonna stick to magnet . I presume this is an air-cooled Kohler since you didn't post any model #'s. When you changed oil the first time did you change the filter ? If not you left a half pint or so of the gray oil in the engine.Naturally you gonna see a little gray in it after you run it a bit. The way the pan is baffled on an engine it is hard to completely drain all the old oil anyway.I would change oil and filter again and also do a compression test to get an idea of where you stand on engine wear.But that's just my half fast opinion.

What weight oil are you using? Lifters can make noise if you're not using 10W30. These lifters weren't designed for straight weight. If you are using 10W30 you could have a bad lifter. The smoking when you throttle down could be a valve stem seal. I would do or have someone with the tools do a cylinder leakdown test and also a crankcase vacuum test.
