Briggs 18 hp electrical system

I have a old Bobcat 36" wb. I installed an '82 Briggs 18hp vertical twin. Since the bobcat originally had a Kohler 12.5 with recoil, there was no provision for a starting circuit.

I wired in a starting circuit, using a Ford solenoid. It's your basic starting circuit, with a toggle switch letting juice flow from the battery through the toggle to a push button switch to the solenoid.

Everything works fine. It starts right up. The problem is I can't shut it off. I choke it to kill it.

By switching the toggle to the off position it cuts juice to the starting circuit. But of course that doesn't affect the ignition circuit.
There is only one wire coming from the Briggs, I have that wire pulling juice from the solenoid for the ignition.

Anybody have experience with these old Briggs? Another wire somewhere that I can't find? I'm going to have to pull the flywheel so I can get a look. Already have the covers off and don't see any more wires.

Started this project a long time ago. But got sidetracked. Just started on it again. Went through the carb last night, bypassed the govenor and the old Briggs sings! Just got to be careful not to overrev it.

18hp on a 36"? wow, is it un-stoppable?

If it is the model I think it is, as you are looking at the carb, to the
left of the carb around the intake pipe is a small terminal for your
kill wire. You need a toggle switch to ground the ignition to
stop it. Make sure you never send voltage to this terminal as that
will destroy the coil. If the terminal is not there, post all of your engine's model numbers so I can look at the engine's blowup.

Viperman, This spring will tell if it's unstoppable. I've never used it.

Fish, Thanks for the help I think I found the connector you mentioned. Comes off the coil. In the pic below you can see the wire if you look close, it's crossing over the top of the head.

TO KILL AN ENGINE.

IF YOU WANT TO KILL THAT ENGINE CHECK FOR THE WIRE ON THE THROTTLE BODY, IF NONE IS FOUND TAKE THE TOP COVER OFF AND ON THE COIL THERE SHOULD BE A FLAT MALE ELECTRICAL SPADE. CONNECT A WIRE TO THE COIL, THEN TO A KILL SWITCH, AND THEN TO A GOOD GROUND, PREFFERABLY BACK TO THE ENGINE. THAT SHOULD KILL YOUR ENGINE ON COMMAND...

Lazerman, Thanks for the info. I found the wire off the coil with spade connector. It's in the above picture, unfortunately it doesn't show up very well. I'm all set now

That is why the terminal is there by the carb, so you don't have
to pull the top cover to hook to it.
