Crabgrass infestation after topdressing?

Anybody ever seen a severe crabgrass outbreak after topdressing? I've seen a few over the years and they've usually involved river sand. I've heard some people swear by river sand but I've also heard that river sand can contain weed seeds as opposed to using a bleached white sand. I've seen greens and tees being topdressed on golf courses and it looks like they use the white sand. Any thoughts on this?

I avoid topdressing until August for that reason.. Apply Drive at the table rate should take care of it.

I can't see river sand having that many crabgrass seeds. What were the steps in the topdressing where you saw the large crabgrass outbreaks? Just spreading a thin layer of sand? Was the sand applied to thick and the turf weakened? aeration? no pre-emerge in place?
