We have the blades going the entire time we dethatch...collecting the thatch as we go. After we are done with the rake we put it in the "up" position & proceed to mow the lawn a few more times to pickup any remaining thatch...the lawns look great after we do it. We dethatch every lawn that we maintain each spring.
