Kohler K314 question

Hello I'm new to the site I was directed here by a friend on another site.

I have a question about a 78 Kohler K341 16hp John Deere motor. It has a knock and not the normal connecting rod knock, its spuratic, more like a rattle at times.

I replaced the piston and rings last fall with "old style" stuff, the sleeve looked good, rod and crank looked good. I miced the sleeve and it is round within standard specs.

My question is I was told by a "tractor guy" that the noise is coming from the counter balance. That they also have a tendency to let loose and fly through the block. He told me that "pro pullers" take them out for that reason and I should do the same.

I'm doing research before I go taking parts out of a running motor. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this?

Thanks for any help you can give.

If you want to see if really come apart listen to him and take the counter balance out. Sit back and watch her shake, rattle and BLOW!! Just keep babying the old girl the way she is. Keep good additives like lucas in the crankcase and pray it doesn't come apart anytime soon. The noise is more than likely coming from the rod not the counter balance.
