Well here's the deal. My mom is set on using this mulch in our beds that are located under some shrubs. http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...egoryID=501757 But the problem is we have a huge oak tree that loses its leaves during the fall and the leaves fall into the mulch, then it's impossible to seperate them. We put in this mulch this summer without thinking about the leaves so i had to tear it all out this year & throw it away. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And yes, Ive tried a vac but it's way too much work and doesnt work very well. We were thinkin of putting some kind of thin netting over it to catch the leaves. Thanks in advance...

Well yeah that'd work, but the problem is there's leaves all in the mulch. I hate to put mulch down then have to take it all out & redo it every year. Oh well I guess it's worth it....we've got the nicest yard on the block

Why do you pull all the mulch out and redo every year? Old mulch breaks down and adds lots of good nutrients to the soil. Rake out the leaves and just put fresh mulch on top.

The stuff will mat down and fade by time next year comes anyways so you will want to refresh it any how..

Recon,
Do you own an electric blower or small gas blower? You can blow out the leaves to a comfortable level and lightly recover the mulch each year. The use of mulches are for more reasons than aesthetic purposes. We apply mulches to a depth of 3" usually around all landscaped established shrubs and trees. Don't do this around freshly planted and tender annuals. As the mulch breaks down (within 1 year) its material will turn into humic acids and organic material that are necessary in fortifying the soil in the beds. Sometimes we take out all the mulch when it comes to the point where we overfill the steel edges or trenches. This usually occurs about every 3 years or less. What you are doing is what we deal with every year including the other LCO's whom make a living at applying mulches. Leaves are just part of nature that makes it all happen.

Yep- here in the North where we actually have a lot of LARGE trees which drop TONS of leaves, we don't give a second thought to just blowing the leaves (and sometimes a little mulch too) out of the beds. I can only imagine what a mess we'd have if we had to put netting over all of the beds we have with trees over them lol
