Anyone use servies to promote your business on google?

Company keeps calling us, wanting us to use them to get our name popping up much sooner on google.com and yahoo locals etc. If you search for us directly, we pop up fast for our area.. how much are these type of services worth? Isnt it just adding in correct "key words" into our existing web page?

I just added "keywords" to our homepage tonight. I just wanted to update it, so i uploaded the modified homepage for us, with cities local to us added with lawn care, landscaping etc.

When i search for "lawn care" in OUR home town, our webpage comes up 2nd on yahoo.com , when i search in any of the 3 surrounding towns, our main page doesnt show up at all, why?

We added those cities in our homepage with our own hometown city so what triggers it in the search for our hometown?

fawk google, we dont come up for squat there.... yet 10 of our most local competitors do? It shows their home pages links and superpages and yellowpages etc...

I use google adwords, just started it 3 days ago with budget set at $50 a month. So far the ad has appeared over 5,500 times. Of those 5500 times my site has had 7 clicks from the ad. Right now it's not costing me anything because I got a $50 credit from vistaprint.com and a $50 credit from yahoo small business.

As far as paying for submission, I haven't done anything like that. I have keywords done for the site, but it's been up less than a week, so I don't expect much for ranking yet. If I type in business name and city it automatically comes up, but narrowing it down anymore than that and I can't find it listed.

Here's the way I see it...

It's your Web site, you not only own it but you're responsible for it.
So if those folks make a mistake and Google considers it spamming, you get the blame.
And if Google bans your site for spamming their engine, those services can't do a thing for you, even if it was their fault.
That and you can spend a fortune on those services for some rather disappointing results.

So yeah if you're going to spend money, best off go do the Adwords thing, over and done.

Adwords is great! However the pay to be at the top submission thing is not wise. Do not pay any third party company...go through google and do ad words

Not true. I worked for localbiznow a google adwords specialist. They will be able to spend your budget much more wisely than you will be able to as they have the software to shift your information around to most effectively get it in front of people searching for your services.

Fact is, people do not open yellowpages anymore to find a lawn boy...They search lawn care near XXXXX. IF you are not showing up, you are missing out on business.

I got the guy I sold my company to involved and he ended up with more than 10-15 new accounts on a $50 per month budget.

There are legitimate companies that offer this service, and they may offer you a lot of value. On the other hand, you can easily set up an Adwords account and try it out for a bit yourself. It's not difficult to do, and if you decide you need professional help to better capitalize on the technology - at least you'll have a better idea of how it works.

One really nice thing about Adwords is that you can load it up with a lot of keyword phrases, and then the reports will show you which of these perform better or worse. This will give you some additional info about how people are searching for companies like yours.

There are a lot of tricks to get your website on the first page of search engines. Backlinking, forums like this with your website address in the signature page, lots of different pages on your website, blogs with your web address, emails, keywords, etc. A good web developer can help you. A sitemap on your website is huge. Social networking...Facebook, MySpace, etc. All these add up. Google Adsense is another. You don't have to pay an arm and a leg to get it. I'm working on mine this week. Hope it helps.

The guy from this company is telling me that it is not "keywords" or anything to do with our website at all. Its adding our information to "google maps" when people search for closer areas to where we provide service?

I thought originally there was a fee to have this done, now hes saying they want $179 a month. We already have so many monthly fees, yellowpages fees, ad fees, thats the last thing i want unless its a real AWESOME way to attract potential customers, but it only works for yahoo and google maps :/

now i see what they mean... when i search "lawn care columbus nj" in google maps, we dont show up anywhere for 3 pages, by then its way far out of our area

Why would i have to "pay" a company to keep us listed there per month though?

G & G from columbus NJ comes up first, they come up with big ads in the phone book, yellowpages.com yelowbook.com verizon pages everywhere online and so on.. they cant be spending 1-4k a year on EACH one to get listed right?
