Keeping Employees?

Do you find that it is hard to keep employees from year to year in a seasonal business?

Sure, if you lay them off all winter and expect them to be around in the spring.

Employess want to work year around, not 8 summer months.

The better the company environment, the more willing they will be to return next year. It also depends on the person's personality. I have several guys who return each year. As well, I have many that don't.

I'll bring in the non year 'round employees here and there in the winter just to keep them "close" the business. We have a holiday dinner. We do snow plowing and will have them come in for shoveling. We'll go and get lunch. I'll call 'em on the phone to see how they're doing, ask how mom is doing, etc.

If they like working for you, they'll come back assuming they would be in the sam lay off type position with another company. Some will take unemployment benefits, others won't. We also try to place some of our guys with other companies either in the trades or simply washing dishes for the local pub.
