New turf fertilizes, mows itself!

April 1, 2002 Grounds Maintenance Magazine

Researchers have combined two technologies to create the ultimate turfgrass. By incorporating nitrogen-fixing bacteria into the roots, the turfgrass can fertilize itself with nitrogen. And with the help of genetic engineering, the turfgrass has been engineered to grow so slowly, it only needs mowing twice a year.

Had you going, didn't it? Happy April Fool's Day!

Actually, this really does exist! A farmer in central ontrario has crossed six different kinds of fescue. It doesn't need to be watered and if left uncut all season long it will only grow to be 9 inches in height/

I was reading an article about it just yesterday. It was designed to be an eco-friendly alternative to the high maintenance Kentucky Blue that we use up here in Ontario......no joking either.
