trailer gates - lift assist or build new

I currently have a 16 ft dove tail Load Trail trailer. They mesh screen floor is starting to bow and some of the welds are breaking off. I am a solo guy so lifting the tailgate gets heavier and heavier. I tried a gorilla lift assist system and it worked great for a while but the wires kept breaking. It wasn't made for a dovetail trailer so I had to use some home made shims. That may have been the problem.

I was thinking today about maybe getting someone to build me an aluminum tailgate. Wouldn't this me so much lighter? Anyone tried it? I guess cost might be an issue. Any help or ideas?

I have been debating looking for something to. The mesh on mine bowed out to but i took some angle iron and welded it on the both sides and tack welded the mesh back on. Now my gate is heavier then all hell!

I'm not sure how long aluminum would hold up running mowers up and down it all day.
