Backflow Repair

I have a backflow preventer from a lawn maintenance customer with a busted pipe. It appears to be SCH 80 pipe that broke where it enters the backflow. Of course, whoever initially put it together used PVC cement or something similar.

Is there a better way to remove the pipe left inside the backflow? The only thing I can think is a lot of digging and chiseling. Who knows how damaged the threads will be when I finish that? Any suggestions from the pros?

Thanks

Swap the ball valve for a new one. If it was glued in solidly, you'll never get it perfect and it will likely leak. A picture would be appreciated for the wall of shame.

A good multi-piece nipple extractor can cost over twenty bucks.

cut it all out and redo it. if it was glued in (can you glue PVC to brass?) won't get it out, if it was a PVC backflow, chances are it's either a Toro or it's a non functioning AVB. if it's Toro, it should have unions on it.

Its more then likely 1".

Can I get this at Lowe's or should I run down to JDL?

JDL for sure. They may not even have one....

I go to lowes all the time for my own system and I do not see the 1" . I only see the 1/2-3/4" nipple extractor

Mail order, probably. Many of the tool stores I've shopped at were decimated by the Home Depots and the internet. For getting this done quickly, you install a new valve, and deal with the old one in your spare time.

I believe that's exactly what I'll do for now. The grass is gettin' quite crispy here lately.
