Mower deck spindle bearing question

I have a 1974 814 with a 50" mower deck. I am in the process of rebuilding the deck and am installing new bearings, races and grease seals. While putting the deck back togeather I notice you can over torque the nuts on the spindles (there is a nut at the top and one at the bottom of each spindle) making the bearings too tight or maybe even causing them not to turn at all.
On the Yahoo Gravely Club site there are some other people who are asking the same question........ smoking bearings, belts wearing too fast). What is the proper torque or proceedure to tighten the spindle nuts so the spindles turn freely but are not so loose as to endanger the bearings?
