OK Mike,

If I'm going to jump on this band wagon, I need both the model AND serial numbers off your unit along with the spec number off the engine so I can see exactly what you have.....

I've looked your unit over, You say when you turn the key you get a click right ?

Does it click with the key in the run position or the start position ?

Where is the click coming from ?

1) Under the control panel.
2) Near the carb.
3) Down at the starter.

Also, What was the reason for putting a battery charger on the unit ?

the click sounds like it is coming from the starter.and it clicks in both start and run position. The battery that was in it had been going dead for a while so one night i wanted to charge the battery so i can use it the next day and i put the charger cables on the battery wrong and when i turned the charger on it did a quick spark and its been a pita ever since.

It sounds like you have a couple problems, The charging system is one since you been having to charge the battery. The click you hear when turned to the run position should be the interlock system relay under the control panel, There may be a second click not heard from the fuel cut-off solenoid on the carb.

If the click you hear at the starter is pretty loud I would venture to say hooking the charger up backwards did nothing to the starting system, It was just time for the starter solenoid to take a dump.

But, Before you do anything else remove the negative battery cable from the unit frame and clean it well to make sure your getting a good ground.

Then look closer at the starter.

This engine came with a nippondenso starter, They were nothing but problems in just clicking as stated. Kohler has since went to Delco for starters and have been less troublesome.

Since it's that new, If you can get the starter off easily (down inside the framework) try blowing it out good and lube it up, Bench test it before re-installing. If cleaning/lubing doesn't help check with NAPA auto parts, They have the whole starter for a little more than just the solenoid.
