i have used toro and exmark and i think any toro whether belt or hydro is the best walkbehind. i have a 22 year old proline 36 that while not as fast as tthp exmark, to me out cuts and exmark and scalps a lot less due to deck design

I've got a Gravely 36" and love it. But I know alot of people also start out with the Quick Mowers.

I second this....The exmark metro is a great mower.

I third this. A Metro 48" belt is a great mower - built like a tank, lighter than most 48" mowers, easy to maintain, not too big, not too small - and can be had used and in good shape for around $1500-$2000.

I have had very good luck with the Toro belt driven walk behinds. They're a simple design and hold up very well. I've still got the original mowers my dad started our company with in our fleet and theyre from 1990.
