Should I buy this truck?

Hey Guys,

So I recently found this truck for sale in my area and I am contemplating on buying it but I want everyones input first. This is a truck that has actually peeked my interest (everything I seem to find is pretty junky). I think it is a good price and for me i think has pretty low mileage. My question is I am really not sure on the 5.4 V8. I feel that im going to run into a lot of underpower situations but i want other folks that maybe have this truck or experience with it in terms of towing reliability etc... I will mostly be using it to tow my 18 foot landscape trailer around a good amount and the plan would be to put an 8 foot dump insert into it as well. My question is will all this hauling and grass clippings with insert etc in the back you think I will run into underpower issues?? I dont want to buy this truck and in one year from now say wow I need more power. Also, I have plans on buying a double axel dump trailer as well to haul mulch, topsoil, take away debris and just for my general landscape purposes and on occassion I do haul skid steers/mini excavators/kubota TLB's. Bottom Line, I want to know if you folks think this truck will do the job. Thanks for everyones input!!!

Here is the trucks link:see if you can copy and paste into a web broswer

I agree. Way underpowed. My 5.4 is slow towing a 16 foot trailer with nothing in the bed. Get an F350 with a V10 or diesel. That truck is a decent price though. Without extra suspension help an F250 will not hold a dump inset very well

You really need to ask yourself if you care more about looks or functionality. Is the truck going to double as a daily driver? As far as the power, the motor does have a lot to do with it, but what gears are in the truck? If it's got 4:10 gears, it should do fine pulling. Also, you say you want to get a dump trailer and you do haul skid loaders, etc. How often? If it's once a month or twice, I wouldn't weigh too much into your truck decision, as it's not worth buying a bigger truck for occasional use. I personally run all diesel trucks, 2 F250 7.3s, a Ram 3500 and an F550 6.4, but I'm constantly towing heavy with my big ones and I like the reliability of the diesels, as well as fuel economy. I have a buddy that has a 5.4L F250 that pulls a 14' dump trailer and skid steer all the time, as well as plows with it and loves it. I think that you would be better off looking around a little bit more to see if you can find a 3/4 ton with a diesel. You can get into one for about the same price with a little higher miles, but not too many more. Stay away from the 6.0 Powerstrokes, and expect about $1500-2000 in exhaust repairs on the 6.4s around 120k miles. Also, go automatic, but do not do any kind of tuning to the truck unless you have some more $$$ to throw at it. Most diesel transmissions are pretty stout and will last as long as the truck, but as soon as you tune the truck and tow, they degrade quickly and they are not cheap to fix.

5.4 motors love to leave half the plugs in the head. Sometimes blowing half the plugs out while driving.

The only replacement is a helicoil repair kit......or a set of 800 dollar heads.

If you're going to drop that kind of money I personally think you could do much better. I got my 2011 f350 with the 6.2 gas for under 25k.

Edit: that was in 2013 and it had 33k on it and an automatic tranny lol

This is great information everybody I am really thinking this is not the truck for me. Like I said I am just nervous about the 5.4 not having enough power. It would be used daily for my business. I haul skid steer/ mini excavators probably around once a month for some of my bigger jobs. Do you guys think a F-250 with the 6.2 liter v8 will do good with a dump insert and grass with my 18 foot on the back every day? I went and looked at this truck today and really liked it (Ill post link below). What are your thoughts on this one? I am just not sure if I want to pay all this money for a brand new truck, I am very interested in Diesel trucks but new they are too expensive for me and I the fuel pricing right now would put a little damper in profits for me. I would def be interested in a used diesel but all of the ones I find have 120,000+ miles on them. Isnt that a ton of miles? Who thinks a diesel could last 250,000 miles. If folks think the diesel is the way to go maybe I will start to look into it. Yes I know to stay away from the 6.0 powerstroke heard lots of nightmares from my other friends with them around here.

Ahh, see that was something I was unaware of on the 5.4s. I've been out of the gas community for a while and spending most my research on the diesel side of the house. I know a few guys that have gotten some killer amounts of miles out 5.4s with little more than regular tune ups. They are pretty good motors from what I have seen/heard. I would still keep looking though, as already mentioned, you can get a lot of truck for around 20K, even creep into the diesel market a little.
