Trailer 2 Big/Small - 2much/Not enough Equip.

I've seem alot of "WHAT DO YOU CARRY ON YOUR TRAILER" Post on here.

There is about 6-7 Lawn Companies in my town (Yeah, alittle compo ) Some of these companies have a few small pick up with a 6x10 -12-14 ft trailer with 1-2 mowers (mostly 1 wb, 1 Z) on them. I have a 6x12 with 2 wb, 21 push mower, blower, trimmer etc on mine.

But there is one guy, 1 truck operation with 1-2 employees not including himself (He works 1-2 days a week when one of his employees is off). He does only residential yards, up to but no larger then 2 acres.

This guy runs a 20+ft equipment trailer and he carrys 2- 52 WB, 2- 48 WB,
1 -36 WB and 3 Z's (1-72 inch, 2 52 inch).

My question, Im having a problem seeing a reason for a 1-2 man crew to be towing around all this equipment. To me that seems like alot of wear and tear on the truck/trailer not to mention the cost of fuel to haul all this weight around.

I see a need to have an extra mower for mech. issues while out on the road or job site, but 8 mowers for a 2 man crew.....Im not seeing it.

What do you guys carry on your trailer as standard equipment?
Any of you carry 2 or 3x's the equipment needed on you trailer? if so Why?

probably just to show off, unless they have stops where they use multiples of the same size. For that amount of mowers though, he's gonna need close to a 30ft trailer, if not just longer than that.

Yeah hes got them turned in all directions to fit them all. The area he works he shouldn't need more then 1 48 or 52 wb, 1 Z and maybe the 36 WB. He works in the same town he lives, his house/shop is one 1 mile outside of town....I just don't get it but I'd love to have the $$$$ he spends on having all that equipment and what he spends on gas to haul it around

If you have a very large mow schedule then you might need all that equipment even if one machine is only used on one yard that day.

The way I look at it is that sure, you can load the machines that you only need for certain yards on certain days but that might make your route really inefficient if you are driving across town 10 times just to utilize the machine on the trailer.

If you have every machine you need then you can plan your route more efficiently and you would probably be saving miles and fuel that you would use otherwise. That might equal less wear and tear in the long run.

I'm a proud owner a 43" X 71/2 ft. trailer. It fits my two 21" pro-lines for the mowing season and my snapper and billy-goat vac. for fall clean-ups. I am only doing 20 accounts right now. So it works well for me. I think as long as you are OK with where you are at and your customers are happy with your work who cares what you have? Yes some day the larger trailer, two 32" Scag belt drives and a 3/4 ton truck will be needed, If were to go full time and run a crew (which is my goal). But Right now what I have is more than sufficient for the task. PS my Insurance policy is also based on how much value in equipment I have. So I would rather have money in the bank rather than to much equipment. That is just one of many reason for me to be as lean as I can.

Now I'll tell you something else, on those double axle trailers?
The tires wear out a lot faster than single axles, because of the turns.
Not to mention it could put someone over into the legal CDL weight limitation.

I bought my 6x12 because it's also big enough to haul stuff in (like mulch, brush, etc).

But I'm with you on having too much equipment on it, all it does is get in its own way and makes the truck harder to drive.
I will, however, not infrequently have both 48"s with me, because it sure is nice to have a spare mower in case one breaks,
and it gets to a point not all Lco's equipment is always in top notch condition, some machines do seem to break down rather often...
Beats having to run back to the house to grab the spare, thou I will admit that's still better than having only one.

On my 7x14 I have 1 36" WB, 1 19" Push, 1 22" Push, Trimmers/Edgers, Blowers, and thats it. But when I do the motel or a large place I have my 46" on there as well. However when I get my Walker it will be on there all the time as well as the 36".
