I always just idle it down for about 15 or 20 seconds and shut her off.

ya its best if you shut it off at idle, leave it there for a couple seconds then shut it off.

without getting to deep, some engines need to be treated differently. I've found with the Kohler in my Scag, I need to be at least 1/2 thottle. Anything less and it will backfire. Even after a idle down period. In most cases the throttle is in one of two positions, 1/2 throttle or wide open.

I cut the whole property and then pull the mower onto the trailer and let it idle. It will idle until I secure the mower and pull up the trailer gate - then I shut it off.

You've gotta be an idiot to shut your motor down at full revs! Idle your truck for a few seconds before you turn it off!
