Not to start a huge debat with ya gravel rat, but I know i have never pumped out my hpop, eventually gonna replace it with one from a super duty when I do new injectors and turbo, but 235k miles with rotella and no problems yet. My uncle has 300k on his 97 just doing oil changes with either Rotella or Archer 15 w 40. I dont think the little bit of oil in the hpop is gonna hurt the injectors. They are only what 150-200k service life anyway so anything beyond that is bonus the way I see it. My mom's uncle is a service manager for the international/navistar dealer here and advises me on a lot of the stuff we do on trucks (I have 3 7.3 psds and a 7.3 IDI) and has never mentioned draining the hpop. To the op, rotella 15 W 40 every 4-5k on a 7.3 and you should be good to go for a while.

Hey if you don't want to it pump the HPOP res its up to you. A mechanic I know that has been pulling wrenches for over 30 years sucks the oil out of the res on his PSD. He is also running synthetic oil.

Myself I don't like Rotella some guys swear by it but its a cheap oil. Chevron is a better grade oil it is what most people only use out here. One of the gravel mines used to buy Delo 400 500 gallons at a time. Non of the mines use Rotella it is either Esso or Chevron.

Not sayin it wouldnt be a good idea, just saying it's not necessary...from my IH/Navistar mechanic....different opinions I guess. The way I see it if I get 300k out of mine, great, more than that awesome and Rotella is gettin us there so far lol.

Dayum, glad im not out there, It'd be almost time to replace my favorite truck!!! We got em ranging from low 100k up to my 96 with 235k, and that 96 is my favorite out of all of them lol. I have a friend a few farms over with a 96, no bull **** 325k that i haul hay with for him every summer, original tranny, injectors, oil changes when he feels like it, still going. Some will just go forever I guess.

The wet weather rusts and rots the trucks to nothing. The moisture in the air also plays havoc in the wiring etc. A truck with 249,000 miles is well worn out it usually costs you more money in monthly repairs than what a newer truck would cost.

Also the terrian the truck is on wears them out. By 300,000kms (187,000 miles) the transmission has been replaced, the rear axle gears need replacing, the 7.3 PSD needs work usually the turbo is shot or it needs repairs.

Good maintenance is the key but out here everybody is happy to even get 300,000kms (187,000 miles) out of a Powerstroke. A 5.9 Cummins doesn't usually live much longer the truck is definatly shot.

You wouldn't find a 7.3 Powerstroke here with 325,000 miles (520,000kms).

Been running schaeffer oil in my truck for about 65,000 miles and have been very happy with it. I use the supreme 7000 15-40. It is a synthetic blend but they do have 100% synthetic. Many fortune 500 companies and trucking companies use this oil.

Rotella-T or Amsoil.... My 7.3 has 335K on it and no engine problems, just 2 clutches. ( knock on wood ). With Amsoil you only need to change it every 25K or one a year.

Even if you only change the oil every 25k, I would still change the filter every 5k. Or at least every 10k. Especially with the HEUI injection system.
