i wonder if they would have a way to ballast down the pontoons to get a bit better footing in deeper water/mud. or something to anchor it.

There has are two very similar machines to that in the GVRD. They were brought up here as new state of the art machinery, and they haven't moved from the same yard for as long as I've lived here, which is around 3 years. Just rotting away.
