Help with an Exmark Viking

I just made the switch to a commercial mower. It is an older Exmark Viking hydro with the pistol grip controls. I read the manual and it says while the hand controls are in neutral to put it in the desired speed and smoothly release the hand controls. I do this but when I take it out of neutral to speed 1, the engine dies. It goes backwards just fine when I squeeze the hand controls. Can someone explain in great deal the way to operate this mower? A video would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

When you put it into "1" you need to make sure that the parking break is not engaged. If the brake is not engaged, then the make sure that the sensor is not engaged. It may be that there is a problem with the parking brake sensor.

Does the mower die when you turn on the deck? You can not put it in gear, or start the deck with the park brake engaged, but you can go in reverse.

The mower doesn't die when I turn on the deck. I'm under the impression that this mower doesn't have a parking brake. I checked the manual and there's no indication of one either.

i don't have experience with the vikiing pistol grip/hydro but i do have experience with the pistol operation.

i have the metro and its a pistol grip. 5 forward gears plus reverese assist.

when you turn the engine on to go forward release the parking brake (as stated above the engine will die if you put it in gear with the parking brake engaged). make sure you have the operator presence levers pressed (the black levers above the pistol handles). put the mower in the desired gear. release the hand brake levers from either the neutral position brake position (depending on where you have them set). the machine should start moving foward.

it that doesn't work purhaps you have a brake sensor problem as stated above. or a problem with the operator presence levers.

While it is a hydro with no gears, when you slide the speed lever forward there are #'s that go like the gears on the metro. I have never ran any hydro walk behind but the Viking, so not sure what others are like.
