Cleaning trailer connections

The lights on my trailer have been working sub par to say the least. Sometimes they work sometimes they dont. Ive cleaned the harness where the trailer plugs into the truck with warm water and baking soda but im just wondering if theres a better way for me to clean it to ensure a better connection between the two.

You can buy contact cleaner to spray in there....and take a small screw driver to scrape them out a bit. A slight squeeze with a pair of pliers will tighten them up a bit too.

Don't forget to put some grease on the connections. I'm sure the last can I bought was lithium based spray on. Never had any problems.

On my truck I just replaced the wire hookup. It twists off and unplugs from the trucks wiring, and it was a $15 part from the dealer. twist it in and good as new.

Sounds like a ground problem more than anything. Make sure nothing is loose. Never hurts to replace the ground wire from time to time.

Connection could be clean but loose. Like suggested earlier tighten the connection by squeeze the female sockets in the plugs to make sure they're tight.

I spray my connections(truck and trailer) with a wd 40 of some sort about every two days.

I found if you drive a couple washers in to the gap of the trailer hitch where the male slides into the female to take out the slop no more ground probs.

Use some Dielectric grease on both male and female connectors as well.
