Question with Holly

I'm noticing some awesome signs I have not seen before with my holly since I planted it 4 years back. I got the flowers which the bee's are pollinating and lots of growth since I pruned last fall. However, I'm seeing something with the new growth coming on I have not seen so I'm wondering if this is normal.

The new growth is turning red? Pic's of both the green growth and the growth turning red are attached.

Now I do have another thread in this forum with some new landscaping and I just put pine bark down so could the pine bark be smothering and choking the holly causing this red?
