Scalp with trimmer or...

...let grass overtake bed? I could also ask the same about leafs from plants that hang over the edge...

Essentially, this is the scenario I'm talking about: customer puts in vinyl bedliners?/dividers and over the years, adds top-dressing to the lawn, so instead of having any room from the top of the vinyl to where the lawn is, the lawn is already as high or higher than it. The grass is St. Augustine, the beds are full of plants/shrubs.

I try not to just attack leafs/overhang, but I view the edge between a bed and the lawn as a moat around a castle: it's meant to keep the grass at bay and from overtaking the bed. If a tulip leaf gets cut, it's regretful, but I think many of us know that once this grass get a good footing, it can take over the bed - and I'm getting too old and crippled to get down on my hands and knees and pull weeds/grass by hand.
