I have a 48" Scag belt drive with the 5 speed Peerless. I was wondering if I have to clean the whole transmission case and put new Bentonite in or if I can just add more to the grease that's already in there and if so, how much?

It would be to your advantage if your going to be in there to clean all the old grease you can out, This will remove most of the metal shavings that may have accumulated over use.

It holds 12 oz. of Bentonite.....

Yup, if you're going through the trouble, might as well do it right and

BE VERY CAREFUL when you Re-Install the Cover!!!
It is too easy to strip a bolt hole with that aluminum case,
either use a torque wrench to exact specs or just snug them on.

You'll also need a tube of some type of liquid gasket.

when i took my gravely tranny apart i used LOCTITE 515 for a liquid gasket sealent. i think thats what most tecumseh trannys call for anyway. just tryin to help. you didnt mention that u were taking the tranny apart tho??? these trannys are meant to hold the bentonite grease in for the long haul and u dont need to add any unless u are going to be taking the cover off for sum reason. i wouldnt mess with it unless u need to. its not like changing the oil....or changin ATF in a car....u dont need to add or replace fluid in peerless tranns unless it is getting noticeably hot after using the mower for a bit. im no mechanic by any means, just trying to help out with what ive learned

thanks guys

i had taken the cover off to check the shift keys and now i'm putting it back together. there is still some grease in it (i don't know how much) and i just wanted to know if i could leave that in the tranny and add to it or flush it and start over. it seems that the best way is to flush it in order to remove any metal filings. i have heard that the tranny holds 12 oz. of Bentonite. is there any easy way to know exactly how much i am putting in? (dumb question)
