John Deere 830a and 925a

Took my ZTRAK 830 (54" deck) in for it's 300 hour service to the dealer (it is running and cutting very well) and picked up a demo 925a (60 in deck) to use for a couple of days while mine is in for service. Just driving the 925 around the lot and onto the trailer gave me a very good feeling as to the changes that have been made to the 900 series. It handles much better just on the level and is very responsive with the dampened control arms, but I will be putting it through it's paces tomorrow and Friday on my largest properties with many slopes and large, deep ditches.

Just casually mentioned to the wife that I was going to pick up another Deere today, and I thought she was going to have a heart attack. The dealer has the one I really want on the lot ready to go, a 925 w/54" MOD deck...sigh!

Mulch on Demand

The Mulch on Demand is perfect for much of the mowing I do, however Hustler is good, same with Exmark. Actually, the Hustler/Exmark dealer is closer (although not by much) than the Deere dealer, but the Deere dealer is the best in my area and IMHO the dealer makes all the difference.

A day with a 925 John Deere

Got to use the 925 on 3 large properties that are very hilly and one has a long, steep sided ditch. The 925 handles exceptionally well! I put its’ nose down slope and mowed around a tree and no slippage whatever on the rocky soil. My 830 would almost always break traction on the rear during the turn and leave a pretty good sized bare spot. I have always had to mow one ditch slope starting at the bottom and angling up and across to get much of it mowed with the 830, but with the 925 I can mow across the slope completely without having either the front or the back break traction. When I first mowed this slope I would not do it without the ROPS being extended. It can definitely cause the old body to “pucker.”

The cut? Just about perfect! Although with the mulch kit I have installed on my 830, I like the way it leaves the yard much better than the side discharge (I see about 3” of growth in some of the grasses per week). That’s why, should I ever get rid of my 830, I would just have to get a Mulch on Demand (MOD) deck, because there are times when I prefer to side discharge. And after testing out this 925, I would most likely go with it or the more powerful 930 with the 60” MOD.

If there is a better all-around mower out there, and I know there are many that believe there is, then I would say go with it. However, I would be hard pressed to believe it without a serious, real world demo. If there is a better one, then it truly is one heck of a mower! If you can get a demo of a 900 series John Deere, you’re missing something if you don’t at least try it out. It is one awesome mower!
