Andy, I can't tell you about any parts interchange on this machine without a model number to check for any superseded numbers.

Sometimes when the ink is rubbed/worn off the decal a flashlight can be held shinning across not on the decal, While doing so look across the decal from different angles and the imprint of the numbers can be seen.

Can you post the engine serial number ? That may get close on a build date.....

As far as straightening/welding on one of these wheels, Not I ......

Chipper from Hell!

I plan to purchase a new shredder blade estimated at $20 & have the plate repaired by a welder for an additional $25.
A new plate is $230 + shipping.
I’m seeking functionality @ minimum costs.
Thus, it does not make sense to add another $250 to this machine.
I will plan to provide pictures of the repaired plate.

Chipper from Hell - now no spark! What a fight!

My 8 HP tecumseh HM80-155426M on my MTD chipper has no spark.
I removed the flywheel to check on the flywheel key after the Sunday chipper blade crash. This is what I found:
1. flywheel magnetics were ocvered w/ rust

No Spark on 8 HP Tecumseh Engine - Please help!

I removed the flywheel on my 8 HP Tecumseh engine to determine if the flywheel key was damaged during last Sunday chipper blade crash.

This is what I found:
1. Flywheel magnets were covered with rust
Solution – removed rust with wire on bench grinder

2. Both legs of the armature / coil were covered with rust.
Solution – removed rust with wire on bench grinder

3. This engine is solid state & does not use points?
Check for points & assumed secondary voltage in coil must be opened with 2nd set on magnet in flywheel.

This is the armature on my engine.
For TVM, TVXL, 170-220, OVXL120, HM70 thru HM100, HMSK80-HMSK110 & OHM-OHSK120, OHV12, 7-12 hp engines

4. Mounted flywheel

5. Mounted armature & set air gap to .020”

6. Spark Plug was removed from engine & connected to armature / coil wire & base of plug was held firmly against the engine block. I spun the flywheel by hand & did not see a spark jump the .030” spark plug gap.

7. Here are my questions:

1. What is acting as a trigger or switch for this solid state system?
2. What do I not get spark?

2. You have the coil adjusted too far away from the flywheel magnet;




It's a old myth that rust will cause no spark but it's fact that it will not effect it....

If you still don't get spark after adjusting to proper specs disconnect the kill switch and check again.

This is the way I set ALL coils on ALL engines;

Rotate the flywheel magnet away from the coil. loosen the two mounting screws then pull the coil away from the flywheel and just snug the two screws.

Rotate the flywheel magnet in front of the coil and insert any business card between the coil and magnet. Loosen the two screws and let the magnet pull the coil to the flywheel, Hold a slight pressure on the coil pushing it against the flywheel then tighten the screws. Rotate the flywheel to remove the business card......

Lots of useful info in this thread. I'm having a similar problem with my Tec 8hp so thought i should add it here.

Mine won't start by pulling with full choke/throttle. It seems as though there is no fuel getting to the engine - the spark plug is dry after numerous pulls.
It has a good spark and the flywheel key is in good condition. I've just rebuilt the carb (although only just read about the check ball problem Rob mentions).

Anyway I can get it to start and run really well if i put some fuel sraight into the bore, through the spark plug hole. It then starts straight away and runs perfectly.

So has anybody got any thoughts why i can't get it to start up without putting fuel down the spark plug hole? How can i get fuel to go in there naturally?

But if the hole is stopped up it will not start.
It may fire but will not run.
Tip for cleaning plugged jets and passages. Get a welding torch tip cleaner set. Basically a set of small wires with texture designed for cleaning carbon from small passages. 5 bucks at your tool store.
