New Exmark Pioneer, questioning cut

I just picked up a new Pioneer S with a 22 Kawi and 48" deck. This was a 2011 leftover.

I used it for the first time today. The company I work for has a new Pioneer S with a 52" deck we got a couple weeks ago. My son and I ran the two machines together this afternoon cutting a large area of pretty damp grass, and my 48" clumped terribly while the 52 didn't at all.

They are both "series 3" Ultra Cut decks, both had fresh blades. I can't understand why the 52 literally had no clumping at all and the 48 was terrible.

Could it be that my deck needs to be leveled or ???

the 52 has 4 more inches area to dispatch grasses, where the 48 does NOT.....

If you had a water hose that was 3/4" round......
it will NOT send as much water out of it as a 9" Hose....

NOW..... if you mix any type of misture into this water, at the same amount " lets say a power cool aid RED mix " the 3/4 " would be VERY RED...... where the 9" would be very clear......

you took the same amount of control. BUT you mixed the displacment. and you were expecting the same results......

IT CANT BE DONE...

thanks for the reply Bohiaa, But it would seem to me that although the 48 is indeed 4 inches narrower than the 52 as you point out, it is also then taking a 4 inch narrower cut of grass in with each pass. so the ratio of grass in to the size of the deck should be the same, since the two decks are the same height and design. Only the width is different. I would fully expect them to perform equally given that every thing else about them is the same.

The 48's deck has less volume and no where for the grass to go so it packs against the roof of the deck. The 52 has more room for the grass to tumble around before finding its way out. Slow down, raise the deck a notch, and higher rpms on super sharp blades is my 2.67 cents on the clumping on damp grass.

Try cutting in 1/2 or 3/4 swaths so you're going over the leavins with every pass when this happens. Or...buy another mower.
