Preventing rust/iron in irrigation system

I know I have seen advertisements for preventing or removing the iron from well water for irrigation systems, but now when I want to find them, I can't!

Have a potential customer that just put in new sidewalks and they don't want them stained, and guess what, there water has lots of iron in it.

I know they have systems to remove iron for the whole house by Culligan, etc. and I believe they have them for just the sprinkler system.

Who sells them, and more importantly, have any of you guys used them, and if so, how well do they work?

Rid-O-Rust is one brand name. Expensive to operate, once you buy the chemicals.

For the money, one might rework the system to go sub-surface near to walkways.

I thought of that, I've never done that before, and I would assume that you would have to go out a couple of feet to account for wind or never run the system while the wind blows

What's the effect on the emitters? would the iron clog them up?

Rid O' Rust can be very afordable depending on the particular situation.

I install them on regular basis with very good results here in coastal South Carolina. The cost to operate depends on the PPM of Iron. If the Iron is .7 PPM or less, no treatment is necessary. Anything over .7 will need treatment.

My cost for a 30-gallon siphon system is about $160.00 and the chemical cost to the customer is, on the average, $25-$30 per month. (Installed on a 1 HP shallow well jet with an average of 5 zones.)

I'd also recommend RidoRust. One important note is that RidoRust does not remove iron from the water, it simply neutralizes the color. There is no way to get rid of the iron, it's naturally occuring in the aquafiers.
Regarding costs, RidoRust chemicals added to well water cost roughly the same as using city water to irrigate.

We use a dispenser made by stiles kem with aquadene chemical. It uses a venturi to put the chemical in the water. The tank fits in a jumbo box. On a medium/large residential system, the tank will need filled once or twice a year. I'm not sure where the boss orders the tank from, I think it is somewhere in california.

See if you can find Seminole Products online. They are in Lauderhill Florida. The make RidoRust I last paid about $30.00 for a 5 gallong can. 1 gln + 30 glns of water into your rust tank is good for 10 PPM. Pretty cheap to me except shipping out there is propably costly.

I use it 50 50 to clean rust of horizontal & veritcle surfaces. Straigh with a roller for tougher cleanups.
