Grasshopper 220 Ignition Problems

I have a Grasshopper 220 with the Kohler 20hp engine and was having no problems at all until today when I arrived at my 8th yard it would turn over but not fire. I have no fire at the plugs when tested. Any suggestions to determine which safety switch or whatever else it is would be greatly appreciated.

Others likely will have other ideas, but I'd eliminate defective coils first by disconnecting the kill lead from the coil(s) then see if you have spark when you crank it--this isolates ignition from the OPC switches. If you have spark then you have to go through a process of elimination on the OPC switching/wiring.

If you have the Grasshopper manual it usually will have the wiring diagram. If you don't have a manual, here is a link to the 220 wiring diagram although if I chose the correct year model since you didn't mention it.

Good luck.

Engine model AND spec numbers along with unit numbers could be helpful; http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=144040

Ok I'm trying to upload an image of a connection. When the connection is disconnected the mower starts for a second or two then dies. The year model is an 07. It turned over when one of the spark plugs was disconnected when doing the process previously mentioned...this is the reason to why I felt it was a safety switch. Having replaced just a few days ago on my scag I felt like this is a different problem but I will certainly try disconnecting the wire to the coil. Thanks

The connection I'm speaking of is in the middle of the picture. When the relay to the left/bottom is disconnected I have to crank at all. If the key is turned to the "On" position "Not the Start Postition" the connection clicks when plugged in and out...just trying to give all the details. thanks

Here is some more info guys...sorry im still new at this and hope to make things as easy as possible for you to understand. There is great fire when this connection is unplugged but just seems to fire and only turn over for a brief second before cutting out. As for checking the coils have a look at the picture and tell me that doesn't look like a challenge to remove the cover...hopefully I can wiggle it out without unbolting the engine block???

Thanks so much for the help!!!

I spoke with a local Grasshopper dealer today and we was pretty confident on it being an inline fuse but was unable to tell me where it may be located on this particular model...anybody familiar with grasshoppers have that may have suggestions. He also mentioned I would most likely have to unbolt the engine to access the solenoids which he felt wasn't the problem...at the moment im not ruling anything out but rather trying to eliminate the easiest possibilities first. Thanks
