pete you do some field irrigation in the big sky country don't you?

i've been irrigating for the last 10 days on three small pieces 20 - 30 - 40 acres respectfully.

the 20 acre piece is ditch to 18" pipe w/2 - 12" red top valves, the 30 acre piece is open ditch and concrete and board valves supplemented with tarps, the 40 acre piece is an open ditch with a 36" rcp gate and 16 bank gates.

i flood the 20 in 24 hrs and figure the head at just over 1-1/4head. the 30 floods in three days and i get a full head. the 40 also floods in three days and i figure i get just less than 2 head.

my question is that i'm wondering if i'm getting enough head?

If you are wondering if you are getting enough head you probably aren't.

I'll ask my new B in law. He irrigates his barley the exact same way. Goes out every hour and redirects the flooding.

Jim,

Surface irrigation is infinitely more complex than sprinkler irrigation, which pretty much means you won't get anything more from this group other than bad jokes.

What kind of hard data do you have available to you?
