Got stung a few times today

Doing a leaf removal job felt a seering pain on my thumb looked down and saw that I had yellow jackets or bees or something all over my sweatshirt. Threw the blower down and ran to my crew guy yelling at him to use the blower to blow them off me. Took him a few seconds to realize what I was trying to get him to do. He said they were all over my back as well. Final count: Yellow jackets 3 me zero( got stung once on my thumb, and then my arm and leg - these stings were not near as bad as the one on my thumb - I wasn't wearing gloves at the time). I guess because I had thermals on under my jeans, and then had a sweatshirt on that the latter two stings were not near as bad. 10 hours later and my thumb is still hurting.

I found the nest, underground at the base of a tree. I was a good 30 feet away from it when I got stung but I had just been over by that tree blowing leaves immediately before. Are these things yellow jackets or what? About 3/4" long, goldish yellow. Not very big but man those stingers hurt. I thought yellow jackets looked more like wasps, these looked more like what I would just call "bees."

After some google searches I learned something new today. From the pics I found what I got stung by are called "ground bees" which are a type of yellow jacket but they resemble "bees" more than the common wasp shaped yellow jacket. Described as being fairly aggressive especially when disturbed... yeah, I can vouch for that.

I got tagged a handful of times while trimming up a hedge this year. A wasp nest was tucked in near the base of the hedge, and they didn't get disturbed uptilI was up in there trying to thin out the Nandina. I was feeling it hours later also, and didn't feel to hot as the evening went on. Worst sting yet was a scorpion though.

We got a big yellow jacket nest by the house. T hey have never stung anyone here yet and I normalyy check them out every morning. They are in a big Liriopi. They have chewed down a bunch of leaves and made a nice pathway in to their home. They will put off chemicals to warn the nest of danger. When that happens they stop leaving the nest for food until the alarm is over. During this time they can be dangerous because all the ones out in the field coming back won't leave, so the nest will have max occupancy. They resume normal activities of feeding their young after the alarm is over.

This has been an interesting study for me. Alarm them your in trouble. I think its cool to stand 1.5 feet away from the nest and never get stung. I move slow around them. The nest at my house will be dug up this winter to show the size.

I got stung a bunch this year. Way more than normal. I not exactly sure what kind of bees they were but I think they were mostly yellow jackets.

Haven't been stung in the 7 years I've been doing this. Came close many times though. Couple weeks ago mistakingly aimed blower at a wasp nest on customers barn. Was about two feet away. They just sat on the nest with the 100mph air on them. It was cool out and they probably didn't know what the heck was going on. No more worries about such thing this year. Mowing season over today

I have been stung in years past. But about a month and a half ago I was stung and before I finished mowing the back yard I was experiencing a allergic reaction to it (first time that's happened). I finished the two yards at the stop and by the time I got home I was in pretty bad shape. I took Benadryl a couple of times that evening and it finally subsided.

I never worried about getting stung before but now I have to.

Ive only been stung once while on the job, last year by a yellow jacket...boy did it hurt. I was trimming around some oriental grasses and a few of them came out of no where. Only got stung by one of them but that was bad enough...
