BTW... I'm learning it's not a bad idea to check on your customers (home owners) ability to pay BEFORE you do work. Checking to see if they are in default or foreclosure is public information, you eggeheads with smart phones can do it on the spot.

Of course if you do work for the school or city you already know they are broke and it's a 60-90 day cycle before they can raise everyone's taxes and pay you.

I just did a service job on an install I did 9 years ago. I haven't been back there since but the previous owner left my number with the person that bought the house off him in the last few months.
There was nothing majorly wrong, just three van nozzles were replaced where the ground has sunk and the sprinklers are now slightly above the soil level and were hit with the mower, and through the gardens I raised four of the risers so that they cleared the hedges that have grown much taller since being planted.
They guy was happy enough and was asking advice on the lawn etc, then I gave him the bill and he seemed shocked at what I charged him. He looked at the bill and said "Holy ****. I wasn't expecting that". He grabbed his cheque book and signed it and gave it to his wife and said "you fill out the rest" then he disappeared and I didnt see him again.

I was there for just over an hour and charged him $88 service call, $6 each for the Van nozzles (which is what they cost here) and $3 each for the risers. Total was $121 with tax. I thought it was reasonable but I don't know if the guy was genuinely pissed off or just joking, but he didn't say thanks he just went inside the house. Earlier he was joking about the first service being free.

I just don't get some people.
If I had a tradesmen coming to my house I would be expecting $200 minimum, even if they were only here for 20 minutes.

yup, that's my minimum.

there are a few guys that have 521/pro-700's around here, they are still nickle dimers, punch the public for service + locator + locating charges. some are giving the locate away, others are way over my fee when the problem is solved.

people think that with the state of the economy that the work force is flooded with qualified individuals that will cut them a deal to get the work, costs are the same regardless of the state of the economy.

the one thing the public knows from the get with me is that i'll resolve the issue for the set price or they don't pay a dime.

You're just a narrow minded, bigoted, right wing fanatic; if you we open minded like the Obamorats ( ), you'd see things their way.

Remember, whatever your political stripe... there's a distinct difference between an open mind and a hole in your head.

Open Minds have a sense of humor. Hole in the heads are the frothing at the mouth types. I think of myself as open minded.

That's the way it should be.

There are so many shonky people around that will bend the client over at every opportunity. I did another service job last week where the HO mentioned he had a plumber come in to cut a shutoff valve into the (copper) manifold as there wasn't one there and the valves were leaking. I looked at it and straight away saw that there was already one there next to a pipe about a foot away where it came out from the house, yet this plumber still cut another one in and charged $400 for it along with a few other small things. The manifold was on the brick wall of the house so was in play view. I find it hard to believe the plumber didn't see it but just wanted some extra money. I can't stand that sort of thing.

Used to call them Gits but now I call them demagogues, bunch of talking heads sitting around talking about a village and singing Kumba Ya at tax payers expense... oh yes, for the children.

Unless there are mitigating circumstances, I fix the problem or you don't pay. I can usually tell early on if it's out of my league, that's when I refer the job to some of you hydro physicist's.
