Thought id get a topic going

Well our season is finally winding down for year. Now it is time for planning for our upcoming home shows fun fun. So is everyone planning on doing their home shows this year? I hope everyone had a great year like we had, but I know in most areas this may have been down year still as the economy is still recovering. Some companies here are not doing them cause their year has been bad as well.

I have never done a Home Show and prolly never will. Thought about it many times but could not see a adequately positive ROI.
Here a 10' x 10' space, which is too small for a Pond display, is $5,000. Add to that the actual display costs and you have a good size chunk of change tied up. Got to sell quite a few ponds just to break-even If I were a full service Landscaper, like most of you guys, it would prolly be effectual, but as specialized as I am, it can't be justified.

Almost forgot, 2010 has been a terrible year! Holding out hope for 2011.

Is it for everyone I can't say but I've been on both sides of the fence. Like tad I was a specialized n just ponds(now we offer full landscape n hardscapes services) so I had to look at it and see if it would be worth my time. At the height of pond building which was several yrs ago it was but as time went on I we began to shift away from homeshows. I looked at other alternatives to get our work out and I started renting space at the mall.. In terms of dollars it was worth I could rent a space for 3 months for wat I payed for for a week. We got bak into homeshows last year and it was a great success.. We basically sold our display plus 25k+ on a 2k booth that was a 10 x 20. So we are gona go at it again.

The thing I don't like about HS is the running all over God's creation to do estimates.

You must give free estimates! I quit that 3 years ago with no noticeable negative effects on business. 'Tire Kickers' can drive you bonkers.

I give the initial estimate for free than anything more will be billed if the plan gets more involved. When I did HS I was new in business and I was really GREEN!

The company that I deal with does what they call a consultative estimate. He'll come out to see your property and go over your plans and then bring a quote back to you.....all for the sum of $500 of which he'll credit back if the job comes to life.

That is exactly the method that I now use, except my consulting fee is considerably less.

Been using that way for several years. It helps ease the customer minds knowing that and gives them the choice if they walk away they lose the money if they go with you they get it back. This also helps weed out the "tire kickers " as well.
