I am an average homeowner. Actually a software engineer from Cary, NC. But damn I love lawn care. I am so jealous that you all can do it as a business (rather than me sitting inside all day). However, I am here to learn how professionals do it, so that one day (hopefully within 10 years) when I buy 5+ acres of property I can do it right.

I currently only have 0.52 acres (I know not a real lawn guy). Maintain my used MTD that I bought for $100. Rebuild the spindles, replaced every belt, battery, tires, etc... It works for what I need. Currently looking at building a retaining wall and tearing out a few beds. So if you are in NC and need some work, let me know, for the right price I may hire it out/try to work side by side with your crew to lower my rate.
