For those who have made a lift gate assist...

Made one today it came out pretty nice ,but i dont think im getting maximum assist.Spring and housing are near the gate with the pully aasembly at the very end by the gate.Cable is attached at gate about 36" up on a 48" gate. When gate is up there is no load on the spring.Should i raise the eye hook where i have it attached on the gate to create more tension on the spring while gate is up? thanks for the help !!!!
I did a search and couldnt find help with this particular problem..

Here is some pics of my fabricated rams and spring assist. I say yes there should be some spring tension when the gate is all the way up.

I enclose my springs in 2" pipe, this really helps when loading and working around the spring with the gate up or down. The pipe is much better than the cheap made boughten lift with plastic or thin tin covers. 5 years plus and I love my spring assists.

I install gas shock dampners to my gates. Same used on cars for the hood. Easy to install and it's out of the way.
